The R's are very nice, more refined in their sound, but don't go as low. I will upgrade to the Rs when I get a change. Great high end, very nice speaker. Just not loud enough for a large basement.

Not as esthetically appealling either. Kind of small, with yellow cones. Granted, I did not break these in enough, but the sound never bested the KEF s. Returned them. Gave them hrs minimum of break in, and I never liked the sound from the Kevlar.Amazingly fast and clean mid-range response. Startlingly pure high frequencies. All operating as a single perfectly integrated voice to deliver sweet, accurate sounds of unprecedented clarity. KEF Uni-Q driver array is nothing short of a masterpiece.

The new mid-range Z-flex surround smoothes the tweeter transition to the front baffle, which results in undistorted high frequencies. Large voice coils increase power handling and dynamics, reducing distortion and delivering exceptional vocal clarity. Venting the tweeters reduces pressure behind the dome, increasing midrange bandwidth and lowering distortion. Upper registers are articulated with flawless precision. Dynamic, uncompressed and undistorted bass of heart pounding clarity envelops you, striking deep emotional chords.

The geometry and bracing of the enclosure optimises vibrational behavior, reducing secondary radiation from cabinet walls for a cleaner sound. Damping panels further minimize cabinet resonance and colouration.

Front baffles are clean with no visible screws.

Thread starter douede Start date pm. Hi folksI would like improve the sound of the my KEF R speakers by upgrading its crossover parts, and am thus looking for suggestions, advices, feed-back You will find attached my pictures of its crossover world premiere! Thanks a lot.

Last edited: pm. More options. Zvu Member. Only thing that would bring some improvement in their crossover would be upgrade of 3mH coil in woofer section. You should upgrade to air-coil but try to keep Rdc the same - it is somewhat highish. Bypass those elcos with some small foil caps and that would be it. Everything other than complete redesign would be a waste of time and money. Zvu, thanks for your answer. So you think no safe improvement by upgrading caps and resistors in serie with HF adn MF?.

Zuhl Member. These are fine speakers and upgrading the caps would be well worthwhile. The difference between electrolitics and even modest caps will be noticeable.

Something like Ansar Supersound caps would work nicely. You'd need to replace the boards, as they won't be big enough for these caps. The only real issue you face is the size of some of the caps.JavaScript seems to be disabled in your browser. For the best experience on our site, be sure to turn on Javascript in your browser. With massive bass extension heightening the drama and flawless 3-D imaging that faithfully tracks the action on screen, the illusion of being there is phenomenal. The vented tweeter design allows upper registers to be reproduced with startling clarity and smoothes the transition to midrange frequencies. The dome assembly is cleverly braced, pushing the first breakup beyond the audible range so that the sound you hear is flawlessly accurate. The ensemble is a masterpiece of modern acoustic engineering.

Vocals suddenly seem much more immediate — more open and natural. Surrounded by sound of such clarity, you start hearing things you never did before. The sound of a distant cricket in an outside scene. A breath, even. All you hear is what the artist intended. For movie effects, this noticeably enhances the realism of the sound when combined with the newly assertive midrange. It's a dramatic upgrade and the Q Series are the best-sounding Q Series ever. Seriously, don't miss that newer review. This review covers the edition KEF Q Series and some of these models are now unavailable or available only in limited quantities at places like Amazon. Home cinema passions are gradual. Ever evolving. One doesn't usually leap directly into top tier gear.

There are budgetary hurdles and physical space limitations.

Like some of you reading this, I began with home theatre in a box systems -- 5. Well, entry-level for the speaker world, where it doesn't take much effort to spend new vehicle prices. I had never heard KEF before, but the price was right and the demo was exquisite -- specifically, I listened to an hour's worth of music on a pair of the series flagship iQ9 towers, and immediately fell in love with the clarity of the mid and high tones while the LFE performance was so punchy it didn't always need a subwoofer a good thing for apartment livin'.

My wife, who unfortunately has suffered some partial hearing loss in one of her ears, was even more impressed, remarking how the iQs easily reproduced frequencies that were challenging for her to hear in other products.

Seven years later, I find myself on a pilgrimage to demo as much Dolby Atmos gear as possible and, after spending time with the excellent R50 Dolby Atmos add-on modules as well as the powerful CiRR-THX in-ceiling speakersmy friends at KEF sent the latest iteration of the Q Serieswhich is the company's top selling speaker series. The heart of any KEF speaker is its "Uni-Q" driver array, which places both the mid-range and high frequency driver unites "in one coincident assembly.

The results are, therefore, more natural and lifelike for every audience position.

KEF Q900 Hangfal

The tweeter is topped by the Tangerine Waveguide -- which enhances treble performance, protects the tweeter, and aids dispersion -- while the mid-range aluminum alloy cone is housed in the compact Z-flex surround for minimal interference and distortion. We'll get into the comparing and contrasting in a moment, but testing my aging iQ Series speakers next to the new Qs demonstrates how far this speaker range has evolved in a very short time.

The speakers themselves, while not quite as eye catching as the previous model, are a bit larger, much more tonally transparent and accurate, and are built with much more high-end components. For example, the speaker binding posts replaced external wiring for internal screws that allow one to single or bi-amp each speaker. The closed box flagship towers are a two and a half-way bass reflex design, with an 8" mm Uni-Q driver array that includes a 1.

Each tower includes adjustable spikes to isolate the speakers and raise them up off the floor. This closed box flagship center speaker boasts a three-way bass reflex design. It includes one 6. Crossovers are set at Hz and 2. The Q monitor features a two-way bass reflex design, a 6. It has an 87db sensitivity rating, a db SPL maximum volume, and a 42Hz - 40kHz frequency response. Crossover frequency is set at 2.One of the notable aspects of the iQ90 was its curved cabinet, a feature of more than aesthetic significance since it stiffens the enclosure, whereas the large side panels of a conventional box cabinet are prone to resonance.

Whether the trading-off of cabinet stiffness rates as a good idea is a moot point — particularly as our measurements show the Q to be 1. Equivalent figures for the Q are 3. They are the two diaphragms above and below the central bass driver, dmk contact is rolled in to assist the Uni-Q array at low frequencies.

ABRs are a good thing in that their cones block off the internal air resonances that can all too easily express themselves via an open reflex port. The most important of these can be found in the revised Uni-Q array. Nothing has changed, in that it still comprises a dome tweeter at the apex of a cone driver where the dust cap would conventionally bebut much has been evolved.

The cone is now of aluminium rather than plastic, which bodes well for freedom from the insidious viscoelastic effects that some attribute to thermoplastic cone materials. Also new is the larger, 25mm diameter tweeter dome and the novel Z-flex cone surround. The benefit of this is manifest in Chubby teen butt much smoother upper treble output of the Q, whose frequency response in the last octave is no longer the Uni-Q switchback of old.

One further change: we have become used in recent years to KEFs being supplied with linking cables rather than straps for their split crossovers, on the basis that these sound better. But the Q has neither cables nor straps, replacing them with screw-out links between the two pairs of input terminals. When these are screwed in fully, the terminals are linked for single-wiring; when screwed out fully, the two halves of the crossover are isolated for bi-wiring or bi-amping.

Recorded in Greyfriars Kirk, Edinburgh, this serves up a big, spacious acoustic but escapes being smothered in a blanket of clouding reverberation. Far from it: it has the sort of vibrant sound that over the wrong speakers can sear your ears. The iQ90s had turned the rare trick of recreating the cavernous acoustic while also giving full vent to the crispness and vitality of string playing that makes this track fizz with energy.

On that basis, what better music to play through the Qs as well? The result was not a reprise of the iQ90 experience. The Q delivered on the large acoustic but was lacking the clarity and dynamic zeal to do full justice to the orchestral sound.

Not having played the track before, I reacquainted myself with it first through the Qs. It sounded smooth, and warm and spacious, but I was pretty certain that the master-tape must be a leap or two removed, so I brought in a pair of Thiel CS1. The Qs are in the latter category. Higher in frequency in fig.4, the crossover between the Q's midrange unit and woofers (green trace) and its coaxial tweeter (blue trace) lies approximately.

Crossover frequency: kHz. Frequency response: 32Hz–40kHz, ±3dB. Impedance: 8 ohms. Sensitivity: 91dB/V/m. Maximum output: dB. Amplification.
